59 Candles, 59 Things – Part Twenty

Twenty Eighth thing: Learning new things makes me happy.

This was not always so.  I didn’t particularly like school. That isn’t completely true.  I liked certain topics – English, Drama, Speech, Literature, Art, Oceanography, Psychology interested me.  Math and science – the worst. But I think that’s true of most people, we excel at what excites and intrigues us, wanting to learn more.

What inspired me to choose learning new things as my twenty eighth entry in this series of what makes me happy has to do with life lessons, finding out the extent of what you don’t know and learning from those experiences.

I have been talking about buying a new bed – for years.  It was a priority when I retired (over a year ago) but I was filled with trepidation over obstacles, certain that the process would be difficult and stressful. I remember buying my last bed when I was forty, thinking “this will be the last bed I’ll have to buy”.  Longevity runs in my family so I’m not sure why this thought stuck in my mind.  Just because I’d purchased a top of the line bed what expectation did I have for how long beds last?

I moved here 30 years ago and my queen size box spring was nightmarish to shove onto the landing, scraping the ceiling before turning the tight corner and getting it up the stairs. When I bought my current bed almost twenty years ago, I moved my other bed to the guest room rather than have to contend with getting it back down the stairs of our two story home. And it was not an easy delivery the second time.  (I recall grunting and scraping sounds.)

But I digress. My biggest obstacle: I was certain I’d have to cajole, bribe or withhold my purchase if I couldn’t get the salesperson’s agreement to move my old bed down the stairs and cart it away. I just knew I’d be told that was my responsibility. As a result, I procrastinated yet still complained about my too soft bed.

Well, I was wrong –  and I’m admitting it.

Not only was delivery free, the old bed would be removed at no charge and carted away. All products in this store are made in the USA (this is important to me).  0% financing for 50 months means I can leave my savings account untapped.  I even learned to my delight that an adjustable bed is not just available from a certain manufacturer but rather is what you buy with any mattress – in place of a box spring and standard frame.  It will attach to my oak headboard which I love. In addition to raising either my head or feet it has other features including MASSAGE.

Yup.  Did not see that coming!

In two hours from the time I entered the store till the completion of the sale, I’d learned how much I didn’t know. (It was substantial). After years of serious sleep issues, two bad shoulders, lower back pain and the like, I’m kicking myself over not having done this sooner.

But as Jules, my yoga guru said “you weren’t ready yet”.  Namaste.

Anytime now the delivery van will arrive, cart away the old bed (buh-bye) and bring my new bed.

And considering I’m only fifty nine, I’m hopeful this isn’t the last bed I’ll ever buy. But next time, I won’t let the amount of things I don’t know impede me. Instead I’ll look forward to learning something new.

59 Candles, 59 Things – Part Nineteen

Twenty Seventh thing: Candles make me happy.  And relaxed.  The glow of candles makes my home cozy. I love their soft lighting and calming fragrance.

Before retiring, I would frequently come downstairs in the morning, feed the cats, make a cup of tea and then retreat to the living room.  After lighting several candles and then covering up with a soft blanket (to be followed by snuggling cats), it made being up before sunrise peaceful and was a lovely way to start the day. It’s even better now that I’m retired! (just ask the cats)

Spence and I burn candles most evenings, especially in the winter when they provide our only light other than the blazing fireplace.

I love to give candles as gifts as well as receive them.  Just recently, my lifelong BFF gave me this amazing candle for my birthday.

Another favorite of mine is this three wick candle:

59 Candles, 59 Things – Part Eighteen

Twenty Sixth thing:  Returning home from vacation, I was anxious to see my garden.  Last year we traveled at the same time of year but with an unseasonably early and hot spring (we’re talking mid-March and no final snowfall) everything was in bloom. We’d come home in time to see the end of our irises, just a few blooms left.  Not so this year.  They’d only just started opening and with just the right combo of rain, heat and sunshine, are coming into their season. They are so lovely that I had to make them my 27th thing. Here’s a little gallery of my irises that have bloomed so far:

Twenty Fourth thing – Before retiring last year, I worked for a major bank in a small community. I kept noticing the local women had great manicures. Whenever I asked who their nail tech was, the answer was always “Dawn” and I became a client. As an additional benefit, Dawn has become a friend whose company I enjoy. While she pretty-fies (is this a word?) my nails, many laughs are shared and world problems are solved. Here’s just a sample of a few of my favorite manicures:

Twenty Third thing: There is a website that never ceases to make me happy. It has forever changed the way Spence and I travel.  My lifelong BFF was the one who turned me on to http://homeaway.com  She and her husband had taken a trip to the California wine region. Renting a fully furnished home, they’d do vineyard tours and wine tasting, bringing back bottles of great wine that they could share back at their “home” each evening. I was intrigued. How many homes? Where?

The answer: Countless homes and EVERYWHERE!

So far, we’ve stayed in a log home in the Smoky Mountains, a historic home adjacent to Forsyth Park in Savannah, a condo overlooking the mountains in Canmore, Alberta and a zen villa in the Red Rocks of Sedona.  The appeal for us is living as “locals” in a beautiful fully furnished home with all the amenities, no noise from neighboring hotel rooms, no maids in and out and the convenience of a full kitchen if we want to eat in.

Twenty Second thing: I love baths and bath products. I did earlier posts titled “I LOVE BATHS” as an ode to beautiful bathtubs and one called “Homemade Shower Disks”, my foray into DIY bath products.

Our home, (which I love) has one bathtub/shower and was built 70+ years ago. At 6 feet tall you might have guessed that stretching out in my bathtub means if my shoulders are submerged, my heels are resting midway up the wall. Not ideal but it doesn’t stop me from enjoying a good soak most every night as a part of my pre-bedtime ritual.

When we travel, (frequently using homeaway.com) I purposely seek out properties that have big jacuzzi tubs.

59 Candles, 59 Things – Part Twelve

I’m back to the 59 Things – my series on a random assortment of things that make me happy to commemorate my recent 59th birthday.

Twentieth thing: Okra. Yup, you read that right. OKRA MAKES ME HAPPY.

I can imagine some of my followers screaming “What? Say it ain’t so!”

Calm down, let me explain. I’ve always prided myself on trying all food. With few exceptions, I like or love most everything.  However, a few years ago while traveling, Spence and I stopped off at a little roadside spot for a beer and a brisket sandwich in a lovely outdoor setting. When the owner brought our food, she said, “Y’all like pickled okra?” As I looked down, there it sat on my plate, one piece of pickled okra. For about a minute.  Then I discreetly put it on Spence’s plate. “Here ya’ go!”.

Spence took a bite of his, then placed mine back on my plate. “Trust me, you want to try this” was all he had to say. Even though I was certain I didn’t like okra, I took a bite. Then I proceeded to finish it off. Spence just laughed. Clearly I’d liked it. After lunch I found a local vendor and bought 5 jars to take home to Michigan, under the misconception that I could only find this in the south. Thankfully, I was wrong, it’s not difficult to find.

While traveling recently, I saw fried okra featured as a side dish to bbq ribs. I enthusiastically ordered it, confident I would love it.  And I did. The reason I wanted to include okra in my 59 things is that it proved an important point. Never assume you don’t like something you’ve never tried, you may miss out on something terrific!

59 Candles, 59 Things – Part Thirteen

Twenty First thing: Fondue is a happy thing for me. It’s a dining experience whether we’re out for a special occasion or making it at home. Relaxed, delicious, romantic – it’s all good.

I first was introduced to fondue when my family and I attended Expo ’67 in Montreal Canada. With the world represented, I recall going to a Swiss Fondue Restaurant that rocked my world. Even my sister (a very picky eater, especially as a child) was in awe. It was the beginning of a love affair for me that lasts to this day; see below for the link my fondue recipe.

A favorite restaurant of ours is The Melting Pot; I belong to Club Fondue. As a club member, I get an email for six free chocolate dipped strawberries during the month of my birthday. I’m in!

Happy Birthday to me indeed!

59 Candles, 59 Things – Part Eleven

Seventeenth thing:  As I continue along on my series of 59 things that make me happy I have to address the perfect tomato.  Two of my three step kids (the boys) think tomatoes are evil.  Well, I love my step-sons but they are just wrong.  There is something magical about a perfect ripe tomato that is both a thing of beauty and deliciously refreshing. Once the home-grown and fresh local tomatoes begin appearing at farm stands and markets, I’m all about making gazpacho, ceviche, bruschetta, caprese, BLT’s or simply slicing them with a sprinkle of salt and pepper. When in season, they are perfection. You can find my Ceviche recipe on this blog and I promise to add my gazpacho and bruschetta recipes this summer.  In the meantime, please join me in celebrating the tomato!

Eighteenth thing: I have a lot of great pictures of Spence but there are two that are particular favorites of mine.  They always make me happy and both are framed and hang in our home.

These are the original Three Amigos. Taken awhile back by the wife of the man in the middle when all three guys sported ponytails and shared a love of fishing, travel and general mischief. Nick, Mustache and Spence - a favorite buddy picture.

Nineteenth thing:  Is kindness a thing?  Maybe not tangible but as an action don’t we feel better when we are kind to another being? Isn’t it the best feeling when someone is kind to us? Or when we see or read about an act of kindness?

I periodically (and increasingly) find I need a break from watching the news.  There is so much sadness, tragedy and cruelty in our world that I find myself overwhelmed and unable to shake it off.

I always think that kindness, whether intended or a random act, is heartwarming, reaffirming and something we can practice every day. And along the way, make the world happier, a moment at a time.
