Living the Dream in Retirement
I realize I posted two days ago but my garden is blooming all at once and these were too lovely not to share.
Yesterday the flowers in my garden appeared to be in a competition to out bloom each other. Irises, peonies and poppies dominated the flowerbed alongside my driveway.
Within the last week, my irises and peonies are blooming, lily of the valley and bleeding hearts are finishing their cycle. With a heavy rain last night following several hot days this week, my herb garden is starting to show growth as are my tomato and peppers plants. It’s a joy to share my oasis; this slideshow features my peonies, irises and some of the mixed flower and herb beds.
I love peonies and this year they are spectacular! Every room in my house is filled with luscious bouquets exuding the most exquisite perfume.
Being a foodie, I have countless bottles of herbs and spices. The other day, having emptied a bottle of Trader Joe’s red pepper flakes, I soaked off the label and thought hmmmm….this could make a cute little bud vase.
With the holes in the plastic top, I arranged some of the short stemmed peonies from the garden – perfect.
Today, I replaced the spent peonies with the newest garden blooms, my sweetpeas. With their thin stems, the little holes hold them upright making a petite and pretty bouquet.
Today, more blooms appeared in my garden. First one, then another peony opened with so many to follow in the days and weeks ahead.
My irises continue to open at break-neck speed with Michigan’s hot, dry days. Each iris is more delicate and showy than the next. The pale peachy-pink iris is new this year.
